The puppies are cute and they deserve good homes, but this pet shop is NOT in it for the benefit of their animals. Stay far far away!!
My boyfriend and I made our VERY FIRST visit to this store this past memorial day weekend and we absolutely LOVED IT! They have the largest selection of live animals that I have ever seen at any Hawaii pet store! Being a bird hobbiest, I was excited to see just how many varieties of birds that they carry as well as very competitive prices! I got a bird toy there for 20% off and paid $11 for the same toy that I would pay about $28 for here at home on maui! The store was very busy, lively and organized! I wish they had one here on maui!
Staff has been very kind to my family everytime we visit. They know we're not even there to really buy anything. Mainly there so my baby girl can look at some pets and laugh. If I ever need to buy a puppy, I'm coming here. I saw some english bulldog pups here for a few thousand. Cheaper than other stores so far. I was extremely tempted to buy one, but of course I had to hold back.
I just purchased a puppy (he's amazing) from this pet shop. After a vet visit it was discovered not only does he have HOOK WORM he also has a parasite that's contracted through WATER. He got sick because of the pet shop. Now, both of my cats are at risk because this store doesn't take care of their animals.
Ok, fine, they aren't going to eat the FREE food, what's my problem? Turns out, I was CHARGED for the food!! It's on my receipt! Another trick this shop uses is that they don't write on the receipt what it is. It just says, "Dog Supply." I know for a FACT I only purchased five things: a harness, a leash, a dog bowl, puppy pads, and puppy shampoo. There are SIX things listed on my receipt. But because I can't prove one of those six things was food I can't get my money back.
In addition to pet supplies, they stock a good number of plush animals (like Beanie Babies) and realistic plastic animal toys (lions, horses, dragons, etc.). If you're with kids, the pet shop would be a great place to stop into after going to Fun Factory next door!
Always go here to pick up food, supplies and toys for my pets. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. The workers will carry your purchases out to your car if you need assistance.
They have live pets too; from puppies, birds, rabbits, lizards, fish, turtles, and shrimp. It's the most convenient place to buy a furry or scaled friend on the windward side.
Our puppy (have I said how great he is?) hasn't been eating much and we thought it was the stress and/or the parasites/worms. Turns out it was the food. The store "gave" us food saying that it's what they feed their animals. I call BS! My puppy won't touch it and his sister (that my friend bought) won't eat her either. Thank God the Vet gave us puppy food that both are now INHALING because they've gone 2 days without food!!
If you're in a pinch for pet supplies or need to get a puppy craving satisfied, stop into Koolau Pets. Since they're located in the mall and are a small business, the cost of items is a little higher than you would find elsewhere. They do carry a good variety of items: chicken feed and supplies, aquarium, cat, dog, reptile, and bird accouterments.
