I think the Straub Family Health Center is a nice facility. I think the people there are nice and I enjoyed being there; the desk check in area and waiting area both have a nice atmosphere.
I came in to have Dr. Robin Matsukawa check my ear since I found a lump inside several days beforehand. He said it was just a pimple. I was relieved and told him I had worried it was a cyst. He came across very condescending when he said, "Well, technically a pimple is a cyst." I knew that; I told him I meant a serious cyst.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) currently recommends that women should drink at least 72 ounces, which is 9 cups. I am breastfeeding so they recommend I drink 104 ounces, which is 13 cups!
First of all, he knows I am breastfeeding my baby AND exercising most days. Those two things alone make it necessary for me to drink AT LEAST 8 cups of water per day.
This is a big deal to me. He was arrogant and rude about the amount of water I should be drinking and he was completely incorrect as well. He shouldn't be telling people something he isn't up to date on. If he is doing this with water intake then what else is he doing it with?
He said I could help it go away by applying an antibacterial cream as well as using a warm compress.
I entirely disagree.
He asked how much water I was drinking because dehydration could be a cause of a bump in the ear. I told him I try to reach a half gallon. He said, "A half gallon!?" I said, "Yes, that's only 8 cups."
He also asked me what doctor I had most recently seen. I told him Dr. Lori Kimata. She is the midwife who delivered my baby and she is a naturopathic doctor. He didn't seem to like that very much.
I am much more confident in Dr. Lori Kimata than I am in Dr. Robin Matsukawa. I know Dr. Lori is knowledgeable and will help keep my family healthy. My appointment with Dr. Matsukawa left me feeling like I couldn't trust his advice.
Referring to how much water I should be drinking, he said, "If you are going to be using a naturopath, you need to really listen to your body. If your pee is clear you are drinking too much water." It seemed to me that he didn't think a naturopath would be knowledgeable enough to help with medical problems that come up.
He came on way too strong and said, "That is OLD! Eight cups? That is too much. You really need to listen to your body. If you drink too much water it's not just going to come out your ears! If your pee is clear you are drinking too much water."
I asked if there was anything besides the antibacterial cream I could put on to help it go away. He looked at me like I was stupid and said, "A warm compress." I thought he might have some other antibacterial he could recommend such as tea tree oil, maybe witch hazel, etc. Instead he didn't offer anything beyond what he had said initially and seemed very defensive.
Completely without pharmaceutical drugs, Dr. Lori Kimata has successfully helped my children heal a rash that came out of nowhere, heal sores on my sons mouth that came on suddenly, helped me know what to look for to make sure my daughter was perfectly alright or if she would need medical help after a palm tree branch fell on her head, as well as helping me recover wonderfully from childbirth.
